The Duotone Evo SLS 2022 is out now! We’ve had a few delivered and managed to get out on the water already. The 2021 model was the most popular kite on our local beach and a huge hit among our team. The extra lightweight and quick turning really makes a difference in the 8m + sizes and the low end is noticeably improved over the standard model.

After testing the new Evo SLS we can confirm it’s a different beast to the 2021. The SLS materials allow it to be more aggressive and high performance orientated while being the most stable and forgiving Evo Duotone have ever produced. It floats around in the sky in next to no wind for light wind riding especially in the bigger sizes, and climbs out of kite loops in strong winds like nothing we’ve ever experienced. It really is the top performing ‘all rounder’ kite we’ve ever used.

Expectations for the Evo SLS 2022 were so high and with the delays on the release date it’s easy to see how some may have overlooked it, but it’s more than exceeded anything we could have expected. It’s so good we’ve almost forgotten about the delivery delay!

Duotone Evo SLS 2022 Durability

When the new SLS materials were launched on the 2021 model, there was a lot of concern over the longevity and durability of the kites, but our extensive use of these products over the last 14 months (and it has been extensive!) has proven they are not only durable but most probably the hardest wearing kites on the market and seem to experience much less canopy stretch than we’ve ever had on any previous Duotone / North model or any other brand for that matter. The only kites that seem to come close are the Airush range with their load frame technology.

What’s changed for 2022?

The 2021 Evo SLS was such a success there isn’t a huge amount that anyone would want to replace. The riders feedback has led to a kite with more hangtime and softer landings due to a flatter curve through the mid section of the kite created by a change to the bridle geometry. This also gives it more low end power as a bit more of the kite is catching the wind, however the top end is unaffected.

It’s slightly more user friendly in the turn with a smoother arc through the sky and sharper turning with a more connected feel to the kite. The trailing edge has been reduced slightly to improve the steering further which also makes it slightly higher aspect, meaning it’s a bit more efficient and better for jumping.

The central strut has had an additional batten added for extra support and the bridles have been tweaked to help the kite climb even faster through the sky. The 2022 Evo SLS uses the same proven Penta Tx canopy material.

The Dice SLS has had a major change to become the high wind performance kite in the range whereas the Evo SLS is more of the highly popular performance ‘all rounder’ that still excels in big air.

FLEX STRUT EVO SLS

The counterpart to a stiff frame are the Flex Struts, between middle and tip struts. They ensure a direct and very reactive feel of SLS kites. The agility of a three-strut kite combined with the stiffness and the solid frame of a 5 strut kite. A softer material enables the Flex Struts to bend and twist in a defined way. Steering impulses are transformed smoothly and fast into turning actions.

PENTA TX

Penta TX, the guarantee for a sportier, more precise and crisper feel of the kite, achieved by 15% less overall weight and a five times higher tear resistance. It replaces Dacron and is showing 50% less elongation compared to standard Dacron. Penta TX is a quite stiff material, resulting in a high structural stiffness. Especially recognizable in strong wind conditions, leading to less deformation of the overall structure of the kite. It’s responsible for a very precise timing when edging, releasing the edge and all steering impulses. – The precise and reliable steering of a racing car. Penta TX is used in the leading edge and the center strut.

MODERN TRAILING EDGE DESIGN

A narrower trailing edge with a lighter combination of materials to reduce wear and to create a slicker kite profile.

HEAVY DUTY LEADING EDGE CLOSING SEAM

The leading edges of all kites are extremely durable due to a special heavy duty closing seam. The Dacron material at the leading edge is reinforced with a self sticky Insignia Tape and double stitched additionally. The Heavy Duty Leading Edge Closing Seam is resistant to very high tensions and diagonal forces.

LOAD DISTRIBUTION PANELS

As kite geometry improves, the canopy must continue to resist increasing forces. To spread these forces, Load-Distribution-Panels are used, holding the Duotone Evo SLS 2022 kite’s shape even under the most extreme loads. In practice this gives a smoother and more consistent performance from the kite in any riding situation.

FUSION STRUT

This construction allows for a controlled distribution of forces between strut and leading edge. Struts are 100% connected to the leading edge with a flexible Dyneema line, which promotes higher canopy tension and a clean profile.

TRAILING EDGE FORCE CONTROL

The Trailing Edge Force Control is responsible for the smooth power distribution between the different materials of the kite, forcing the tensions in the right directions. Since 2013 the waves are higher and wider to eliminate stress points between the Dacron Trailing Edge and the Trinity TX Canopy material. This change in construction reduces fluttering marks and ensures that the material is not wearing out.

SELF RESCUE HANDLES

The self-rescue handles on the inside of the wingtips can be easily found in case of an offshore break down. They provide a good, comfortable grip while sailing back to the shore during a self-rescue manoeuvre.

ANTI SNAG

The Anti Snag webbing is preventing the lines from tangling around the tip of the kite. Waterstarts are made easier and safety is increased.

DOUBLE-V PIGTAILS

These pigtails distribute the load of the line connections to the kite, minimizing the risk of fatigue, making the Duotone Evo 2020 kite less prone to distortion and helps it to steer more smoothly.

KOOK PROOF CONNECTORS

The kook proof line connection points prevent accidents by guaranteeing that you cannot accidentally connect your lines incorrectly when rigging your kite.
